SID2008, which has been held annually during the same period of the year, is a world class, comprehensive international academic conference about displays where symposiums, seminars and an exhibition are simultaneously held. This year, it was held in Los Angeles. (Next year, it will be held in San Antonio, Texas, USA)

Stereoscopic display-related issues are established as one of the ongoing themes which are taken up every year in presentations at the conference. In addition, a half-day program titled "Special 3D in Cinema session" was held this year, and there were reports on the current situations from the standpoint of creators of 3D movies and presentations of sample movies. 3D has recently been a hot topic in the entertainment industry including cinema, and we recognized the growing interest in 3D anew from these reports by creators.

Concerning the exhibition, a noteworthy thing was that all of the major display manufacturers including Samsung, CMO and LG presented 3D products at their exhibits. American manufacturers of monitors such as TDVision, Planar and iZ3D also exhibited their 3D products at a smaller scale. Generally speaking, we had an impression that 3D monitors that require using glasses (especially circular polarized types) seem to be rebounding as the position of 3D movie is being established. The techniques without glasses seem to be heading toward types for multiple viewpoints. However, the challenge for adopting this system is that it is still difficult to achieve sufficient resolution for multiple viewpoints for large screens.

StereoVision, Zalman (new member), Mark Resources from the United States, Seiko Epson Corporation and Toshiba Corporation from Japan exhibited in the booth of the 3D Consortium. We had many visitors which represented our successful participation in the exhibition.
