Report of the study session jointly held by the Technical Section and the Safety /Guidelines Section
(Venue: SGI Hall, Ebisu) |
|
November 16, 2005
|
|
|
The Study Session was jointly organized by the Technical Section and the Safety/Guidelines Section at the SGI Hall in the Yebisu Garden Place Tower on November 16. The theme was "3D Contents Production Technologies and Safety Guidelines." There were 36 members at the study session for a total of 63 people attending.
For the first part of the session, there was an introduction of the "Outlines of Research Related to Stereoscopic Images" by Professor Honda of Chiba University, an introduction and demonstration of the "Latest VR (Virtual Reality) Technologies - High Reality Stereoscopic Images and Technologies of 3D Visualization of Kinesthetic Sense -" by Mr. Iwata of 3D Incorporated and an introduction and demonstration of technologies related to "Production of 3D Animation by 2D/3D Conversion" by Mr. Izumi of InterScience.
In the latter part of the session, Mr. Chiba, leader of the Safety/Guidelines Section made a brief explanation of "ISO IWA (International Workshop Agreement) 3" and then Mr. Ujike of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology made a brief introduction of the ISO international guidelines.
At the venue of the study session, a copy of the "Information on ISO" was distributed to each regular member. For the regular members who were not able to receive the copies, we are going to distribute them at the General Meeting next year (scheduled on February 17, 2006). Please contact the Administration Office of the 3D Consortium if you would like to have them in advance. The explanatory material of the document (Japanese version) will be distributed to all members at the General Meeting.
* Name of the material "IWA 3:2005 Image safety -- Reducing the incidence of undesirable biomedical effects caused by visual image sequences" (English version)

Outline of Research Related to Stereoscopic Images
- Digital Content Association of Japan and Japan Optomechatronics Association -
Professor of Chiba University
Dr. Toshio Honda (Chairman of "Survey Research on the 3D Contents")
He made a brief introduction of the progress and the background of the "Survey Research on the 3D Contents" which is being conducted by the Digital Content Association. He also introduced the results of the "Survey Research Related to Methods to Display Stereoscopic Images" conducted by the Japan Optomechatronics Association, and its further development in 2006.

Introduction of the latest VR technologies developed by 3D Incorporated
- High Reality Stereoscopic Images and Technologies of 3D Visualization of Kinesthetic Sense -
3D Incorporated
Mr. Kenji Iwata (Deputy General Manager, Sales Department)
He made an introduction and demonstration of the two latest VR technologies developed by 3D Incorporated.
(1) "REMO" is the first made-in-Japan software which automatically generates programmable shaders with high realism. This allows "easy" and "beautiful" real-time movements of "large volumes" of computer graphics.
(2) "SmartColllision" is a software library which precisely calculates interference between objects in virtual reality space.

Production of 3D animation by 2D/3D conversion
- Conversion to 3D of a popular animation "NARUTO" -
InterScience
Mr. Kuniaki Izumi (President)
He introduced existing technologies of creating stereoscopic images by 2D/3D conversion and the new technology which was developed by InterScience. He showed the 3D version of a popular animation "NARUTO" which was shown at movie theaters this summer, and presented the production processes. He also explained the relation between 2D/3D conversion and image safety.

International guidelines on the biomedical effects caused by visual image sequences "ISO IWA3"
Mr. Hiroyasu Ujike (Group Leader, Multimodal Integration Research Group, Institute for Human Science and Biomedical Engineering, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology)
On September 27, 2005, ISO international guidelines on biomedical effects caused by visual image sequences, "IWA 3;2005," have been published. These are the only internationally authorized guidelines on the biomedical effects of images including stereoscopic ones. He introduced the contents of the guidelines and referred to the processes of their establishment.
