The organization of a "Study session hosted by the Contents Sub-committee"
(Venue: Room 707, Japan Education Center in Jimbo-cho, Tokyo)
December 14, 2010

The last study session this year was organized by the Contents Sub-committee at the Japan Education Center.
The theme of the study session was "A key for dissemination of 3D".
During 2010, which was referred to as the first year of 3D, opportunities to view 3D images have significantly increased via 3DTV and the Internet; however, diffusion of 3D contents is not yet sufficient. In this connection, this study session offered an opportunity to think about keys for diffusion of 3D contents and about the future of the 3D market through lectures about the current situation and challenges in the expanding 3D industry as well as the future and the possibilities of development of 3D games by people who are active at the forefront in this field.
During the last part of the study session, there was an intermediate activity report of the QoE3D WG (working group) of the 3D Consortium.
There were 25 members at the study session for a total of 45 people attending.

"Trends and Prospects of the 3D Formats"

Executive Director, Fujiwara-Rothchild, Ltd.
Mr. Ikuo Matsumoto

> Outline of lecture
At the initial development stage of 3D for consumers, Side by Side format and MVC were adopted for dissemination at a primary stage. In addition to service convertible formats, formats with a view to naked eye 3D displays will be considered. This lecture provided brief explanations about them and had a look over future 3D consumer markets.
"3D contents and copyrights"

Director, General Affairs Department, Digital Content Association of Japan (DCAJ)
Mr. Atsushi Yamamoto

> Outline of lecture
Changes in the formats of contents (digitalization) had a considerable impact on systems of copyrights assuming analog formats. Converting contents into 3D is an extension of digitalization; however it may cause new challenges peculiar to 3D.
"Trends of the latest 3D entertainment technologies and their possibilities"

Representative, TRY-Z
Mr. Zenji Nishikawa

> Outline of lecture
This lecture organized trends of game systems supporting current stereoscopic views. In addition, it introduced case examples related to next generation virtual reality technologies and augmented reality entertainment, both of which have recently become active areas of research as the next generation 3D entertainment.
"Knacks of 3D image creation and differences from 2D images"

Contents service producer
Mr. Satoshi Machida

> Outline of lecture
In terms of expression, if you think "3D comes next to 2D!", it is wrong. 2D and 3D have their own individual histories with their own unique expressions. This lecture gave thoughts about how 3D image production shall be based on understanding of differences between 3D images and 2D images.
"Report on activities by the QoE3D WG (working group) under the theme 'Improvement in the quality of 3D experiences'".

Leader of "QoE 3D" WG, (I-O Data Device, Inc)
Mr. Katsuyuki Toyota
