The organization of the "3D Consortium Study Session - Report on the activities related to international standardization"
(Venue: The Elm Hall of Sharp’s Ichigaya Building)
September 17, 2010

The theme of this study session was "Forefront of standardization"
Activities related to the standardization of the optical determination of 3D displays have accelerated since May 2007 when Finland made a proposal claiming that characteristics of naked-eye 3D displays should be examined at ISO (International Organization for Standardization). At the IEC (International Electro technical Commission), Japan and Korea are currently struggling over leadership concerning optical determination of 3D displays. Since such international standardization may cause significant impact on business projects such as that incompatible products will not be able to be exported or strict requirements will be imposed on quality, etc., the 3D Consortium has been supporting activities concerning standardization at ISO since two years ago

In this connection, a study session was jointly organized by the "Strategic Committee for International Standardization" and the "3D Measurement Method Standardization and Verification WG (Working Group)" of the 3D Consortium to report on the activities related to the international standardization. We invited people who are active at the forefront of the activities related to the international standardization as lecturers to report on the current situation on standardization and future challenges. Questions and comments submitted by the audience after each lecture supported an active exchange of opinions.
There were 24 members at the study session for a total of 34 people attending.

Mr. Masataka Uchidoi

> Lecture Outline
In this lecture, the situation concerning the standardization of optical determination of 3D displays with glasses at IEC was explained. Specifically, (1) background and future plans, (2) classification and overview of 3D displays with glasses, (3) scope and major contents of the determination and (4) priority items and agenda concerning 3D displays were explained.

> Lecture Outline
At ISO, establishment of a study group to handle the preparation of standards for 3D displays with glasses in ISO/TC 159/SC 4/WG 2 passed a resolution at the international conference in 2009 which was organized in Berlin. Currently, preparation of draft documents is being brought forward under the leadership of Japan. Specifically, issues such as performance demand and admission criteria which are specific to standards of ISO were outlined.

> Lecture Outline
The technical report concerning 3D displays without glasses (naked-eye) won an international vote at ISO in May 2010, and it will be published soon. From now, preparation of standards based on this technical report is planned to proceed. This report focused on the current issues and future commitment. At IEC, standards for measurement are at CD (Committee Draft) stage. Current situations and challenges were outlined.

> Lecture Outline
(1) Outline of preparation of IEC terminology
(2) Methodology concerning preparation of glossary (selection and definition of terms and utility of glossary)
(3) Introduction of activities (deliberation at international and domestic conferences and exchange of opinions with other countries)
[Other trends of standardization]

> Lecture Outline
Since the technical scope of 3D displays is huge including hardware, software and contents, there are numerous relevant forums. Therefore, numerous forum standards concerning 3D are in progress. In this lecture, forum standards concerning 3D were overviewed and trends concerning several forum standards including ICDM (International Committee for Display Metrology) under SID (Society for Information Display) and DMS (Display Measurement Standard) were explained.
