Study Session jointly hosted by the Broadcasting & Live Action Shooting Working Group (WG) and the Technical Sub-committee
(Venue: SGI Hall, Ebisu)
September 12, 2008

The Study Session was jointly organized by the Broadcasting & Live Action Shooting WG and the Technical Sub-committee at the SGI Hall in the Yebisu Garden Place Tower on September 12, 2008.
The theme was "the latest information on 3D and live-action 3D".
The expectations on live-action 3D as 3D contents with hyper-realism has recently become higher. Actually, however, it is very difficult to create high quality contents by using images which are shot by two cameras. Therefore, various attempts have been done by using image processing. In this study session, the latest trends of "live-action 3D" were introduced including techniques of shooting live-action 3D, business cases, image processing, media and the trends about standardization as well as an exhibition with demonstrations. There were reports by experts about the latest information on 3D including the 3D information from Hollywood which is experiencing kaleidoscopic evolutions and the latest 3D information introduced during "SIGGRAPH2008" which is the world-largest exhibition concerning computer graphics and interactive technologies.
There were 38 members at the study session for a total of 67 people attending.

"The latest trends of 3D, challenges of live-action contents and a path to solutions of these issues"

Director/Producer of IceCube Inc.
Mr. Kuniaki Izumi

<Lecture Outline>
In this lecture, he introduced the trends of discussions in Japan and in other countries concerning 3D technologies especially concerning standardization. In terms of live-action 3D, which was the theme of this study session, the current situations and challenges, the latest trends of image processing, evaluation of 3D video and simulation software were introduced. At the end of the lecture, he made a proposal on the future activities concerning standardization of 3D in the Broadcasting & Live Action Shooting WG.

"3D business strategies by REAL-D"

President of Worldwide Consumer Electronics, REAL D.
Mr. Koji Hase

<Lecture Outline>
REAL D started businesses concerning stereoscopic technologies in industrial and also military purposes 30 years ago. Recently, it advanced into the field of movies and has supported the production of around thirty five 3D movies. It also succeeded in the standardization of shooting technologies in the movie industry. Starting this year, the company is proceeding on to the establishment of a consumer market.
"Orange activities about steroscopic 3D"

R&D Engineer, France Telecom Japan
Mr. Vladimir Braquet

<Lecture Outline>
Orange (France Telecom group) is a European telecommunication leader. Both IPTV and TV content have become strong focuses of our strategy. Stereoscopic 3D might be an important growth factor for the IPTV/TV market; hence the group has been investigating this field for several years, especially in Japan. Shooting and broadcasting in 3D the Roland-Garros French tennis open has been the main public experimentation related to these technologies
"3D information in Hollywood and reports on SIGGRAPH2008"

Image journalist
Mr. Takayuki Oguchi

<Lecture Outline>
During SIGGRAPH, which was organized in August 2008 in Los Angeles, there was a large-scaled session on stereoscopic images. The contents of the session were very substantial including presentations of stereoscopic images on a large screen which covered a wide area of information such as science, industries, entertainment, history and the latest trends. In this lecture, the reports of the session and the information on 3D movies in Hollywood were presented.
