Report on the 3D Consortium Study Session jointly hosted by the Broadcasting & Live Action Shooting Working Group and the Technical Sub-committee
(Venue: SGI Hall, Ebisu)
September 28, 2007

The Study Session was jointly organized by the Broadcasting & Live Action Shooting Working Group and the Technical Sub -committee at the SGI Hall in the Yebisu Garden Place Tower on September 28, 2007.
The theme of this study session was the "Trends of the standardization of 3D and movements toward 3D broadcasting."
This study session was focused on movements for promoting 3D broadcasting and distribution of 3D images which are currently active in the world. The people who are active in these fields from Korea, Taiwan and Japan were invited as lecturers.
There were 29 members at the study session for a total of 55 people attending.

"The trends for standardization of multi-view and 3D images by MPEG"

Mr. Hideaki Kimata
Chief Research Engineer, NTT Cyberspace Laboratories

* Outline of lecture
MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group), which is an international standardization group, standardizes the image information format for 3D displays. The format of image information and data compression methods are the major items of the standards and the methods which use multi-view images and metadata are being proposed. In this lecture, the proposed method was introduced and the prospect of the direction and the methods to proceed toward the standardization were presented.
"Standardization of 3D technologies and applied technology in Korea"

Ph.D. Min-Chul Park
Senior Research Enginieer, Intelligent System Research Division, Korea Institute of Science and Technology

* Outline of lecture
The Korean Government recently announced "3D Vision 2010" to make 3D TV a global standard within 5 years. Currently, many companies joined the movement to proceed toward standardization of 3D DMB (Digital Media Broadcasting) and "3D Video and Image Standard formats" for 3D mobile phones. In this lecture, these movements and the trends of 3D in Korea were introduced.
"Introduction of 3DIDA, which is an industry-government-academia alliance in Taiwan"

Ph.D. Tsai, Chao-Hsu
Project Manager, 3D Display Department, Image Optics System Division, Industorial Technology Research Institute

* Outline of lecture
In August 2007 in Taiwan, an industry-government-academia organization was established to promote the 3D industry for which the Industrial Technology Research Institute of Taiwan, R.O.C. (ITRI) played a central role. In this lecture, introduction of this organization, activities of the ITRI and the current situation of the 3D industry in Taiwan were made.
"The beginning of 3D broadcasting by BS11 is approaching"

Mr. Kohichiro, Nagasawa
Operating Officer in charge of the Office of President, Nippon BS Broadcasting Corporation

* Outline of lecture
Digital high-vision BS broadcasting will start in December 2007. In this lecture, the contents of 3D broadcasting which will be presented by BS11 were introduced.
"Production of 3D contents and the ideas for 3D format for 3D broadcasting"

Mr. Kuniaki, Izumi
Chairperson, Broadcasting & Live Action Shooting Working Group of 3D Consortium
Executive Director, Producer, IceCube Inc.

* Outline of lecture
In the United States, the standardization of 3D digital cinema, and in Korea, the standardization of the format of the 3D contents for mobile phones is proceeding. The movements for 3D broadcasting are active in many countries in the world. In this lecture, ideas for the 3D format were presented from the standpoints of the creators and the viewers of 3D contents.
